I didn't go with more flour since the consistency of the batter was already about where I'd expect it to be. Ian's suggested that I look for a rhubarb pudding recipe next time. Since the cake came out a bit pudding-y, might as well just finish going in that direction.

I had a look at the recipe and I think, just based on gut feeling, that you'd need more flour in there to balance out the wetness of the mush compared to the chunks of rhubarb called for. The fact that more baking powder didn't have much effect also suggests there isn't enough structure to trap the bubbles, hence the dense ness. I bet it tasted great though, and the colour must have been glorious! I think I'll go and see what there is by way of rhubarb in the garden now!

I'm right there with you on the blind hemming. I've tried to make the stitches smaller and then I get skipped stitches and that looks even worse and is not secure. So I only use it to hem dark things that just wouldn't look right with a top-stitched hem but are long enough to catch shoe buckles if hemmed by hand. Yours looks much better than anything I've done.

Hmmm, looking at the hat (adorable!) I wondered if you could borrow the Tilley Hat system of a soft strap threaded through grommets (machine-made eyelets or short buttonholes would work equally well) on each side to keep the hat on. It's adjustable, can be pulled out of the way to dangle harmlessly down the back when it's not windy, and it really keeps a wide-brimmed hat on the head and is basically made out of a long soft shoelace, which should be available in many colors. If you're interested and still looking for a solution for the blow-away hat, I'll send you pics of my mine showing the chinstrap. You could copy it in minutes. I love my Tilley hat and one of the reasons is that simple, effective chin-strap system.

French seams were a favorite of mine also until I caved to the home serger revolution. Baby Lock with air jet threading all the way now, but I'd still use French Seams on a sheer blouse.

Pockets made by Mom have special cachet. I must admit that I used the appliqued tulip pocket on the front of my favorite white dirdle skirt to carry a mouse (a real-live mouse!) in my pocket all through recess in the 5th grade. Why there was a mouse available on campus to do this I cannot for the life of me remember, but I was the only one with a suitable pocket for a mouse so I was queen for a recess, thanks to Mom's creative tulip pocket. The mouse slept through the whole thing.

Those pockets of Caitlyn's are bound to come in mighty handy!

Have you tried any Burda pants patterns? I liked the way they fit my growing girl better than the big 4 American patterns back when she was Caitlyn's size and approximate shape (skinny and tall and then even taller and still skinny). They seem to fit me better also. Don't know if it's still true.

But I'm currently obsessed with French seams. I don't think it's the extra sewing that makes them so time-consuming but the extra ironing and extra pinning. If I were wanting to be really speedy, I'd go back to zig-zagging edges, but I really like the clean finished look French seams give to the inside and the outside of something.

Candy-making is something of a mystery, isn't it? Cookies are my fall-back position, but I've had good luck with home-made gumdrops and my grandmother's recipe for English Toffee that I copied out when I was 10. I laugh every time I get that recipe out and try and remember why I wrote "cook over low (high) heat."

Thanks! The song recommendation reminds me of two other books, neither of which have titles I can remember right now, that're basically the same story. One's got a Jewish flare to it, lovely illustrations, with a parallel story involving some mice. The other is about a much loved blankie that's too old and shabby to be socially acceptable. Both involve elders who transform the much loved item into increasingly smaller incarnations.

I guess I should start planning now for what the next version of this skirt will be!

What a great way to extend the life of a favorite garment and you did such a nice job. I probably would have slapped some elastic in a folded casing and called it a skirt, but you put in a zipper and a waistband and everything! Also, I bet that skirt goes OUT when she twirls. Not much feels better than when you're happy enough to want to twirl and your skirt twirls with you.

Your story makes me think of the song "I had an old coat" I first heard from Sharon, Lois and Bram back in the 80's. Similar story: as it wears out the coat becomes a jacket, a shirt, a vest, a tie and so on until all that's left is a button and then when the button is gone, what's left becomes the song which, "I sing every day of my life." There are several versions on iTunes and one on YouTube if you want to hear it but fair warning, the chorus is very catchy and could become an earworm.

I remember losing my molars and I don't recall it being that bad. Maybe because the molars are bigger or more cozy with their neighbors, but they didn't twist the way Caitlyn's incisors tend to. I don't remember having any trouble eating with loose molars... and they were are fun distraction while doing my homework!
